Trump touts paper ballots as bulwark against Russian election meddling

President Trump, in a joint news conference with the Swedish prime minister, acknowledged Russian "meddling" in the 2016 presidential election and said his administration is working to counteract any interference in elections in 2018 - even as he downplayed the effect of Russia's 2016 influence campaign.

Trump, who has refrained from pointing a finger at Moscow, acknowledged that Russian Federation interfered in the presidential election but said it had no impact on the USA vote tally. Certainly there was meddling. Yet, he again suggested others might have been involved in attempts to influence the 2016 US presidential election.

Asked by a Swedish journalist whether he was concerned Russian Federation could have an effect on the midterms, Trump insisted during his news conference that the United States would prevent any election interference efforts.

"I think we're going to do very well", he said.

"One of the things we're learning is it is always good - it's old-fashioned, but it's always good to have a paper backup system of voting". "The European Union has not treated us well, and it's been a very, very unfair trade situation".

Questioned about why no new sanctions have been issued, National Intelligence Director Dan Coats said Tuesday that they were forthcoming.

"Believe me, everybody wants to work in the White House".

"I like having two people with different points of view", Trump said.

Putin praised Trump as a great communicator who is easy to talk to, a man with whom "you can search for a compromise". It's called paper. Not highly complex computers.
