Geneva - Toyota Motor announced plans to drop diesel models from its European portfolio this year even as Volkswagen (VW), which sparked the fury over the technology, predicts a rebound.

Toyota will have no diesel passenger cars on sale in Europe by the end of this year, citing limited demand and widespread uptake of hybrid alternatives.

The 2018 Geneva Motor Show marks the world debut of Toyota's third-generation Auris compact auto.

The automaker was going to face an uphill battle if it did try to keep diesel passenger cars on the market.

According to the 2017 numbers from the company, sales of the diesel cars in Europe have fallen to mid-10%, while those of the hybrid cars have gone up to 41% in just 2 years, with a year-on-year growth of 38%.

The vehicle firm said that 2017 hybrids represented 41 percent of Toyota Motor Europe total sales.

As part of their electrified vehicle strategy, Toyota are progressively expanding their HEV offering with a second, more powerful 2.0 lite engine.

Similar to the decision taken in 2016, to introduce Toyota C-HR without a diesel version, the new generation Auris will only be offered with petrol and HEV powertrains.

However, the company will continue to offer diesel models of its Land Cruiser SUV, Hilux pickup truck and Proace light commercial vehicles as some customers prefer the higher torque that's offered by diesel engines.

In addition to the hybrid versions, the all-new Auris will offer a single conventional engine, a 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline unit.

But the "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal that blew up at Volkswagen in 2015, heavily discrediting diesel technology, has created a new opening for Toyota, which was the first auto maker to market hybrid engines two decades ago. "We will not develop new diesel technology for passenger cars, we'll continue to focus on hybrid" vehicles, he added.

The new model is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) as expected, shared with the Prius, C-HR, and the new Camry.

Last year, almost 15 percent of Toyota's sales in Europe were from diesel vehicles, down from 30 percent in 2012.
