Indian Army vs Mehbooba Mufti as clashes erupt on 'civilian' killings

A militant Amir Ahmed Malik and three civilians were killed in army firing after militant firing on their mobile vehicle check post (MVCP) at Pohnoo village in Shopian last evening, defence spokesman said.

The civilians were identified as Suhail Ahmad of Pinjora, M Shahid Khan of Kilopora Malikgund and Shahnawaz Ahmad Wagay of Molu Trenz villages.

An Army spokesperson said the youths were overground militant workers, but local residents claimed they were civilians traveling in the vehicle.

However, later at 9:40 pm, another statement from the army spokesman said: "A joint Mobile Vehicle Check Post near Pohan (Shopian) was sacked upon by militants at 2000hrs (8 PM) from a vehicle". In the retaliation, one terrorist was killed. "When police was called in, they found a vehicle some distance away in which another boy was found dead", he said.

Witnesses and reports said that the troops had opened fire on a auto near a military camp in Pahnoo area of the district, resulting in the death of the six persons.

In January, anti-India protests erupted across Kashmir after soldiers killed three civilians during clashes in the same area.

The situation in the Valley remained tense after the death toll in Shopian firing reached six on Monday. The overnight killings have triggered a serious crisis across Kashmir.

While National Conference has said that killings can not be justified with an arbitrary, unproven pronouncement of the youth being OGWs and sought a probe into the incident.

The Jammat-e-Islami in it's statement said that the incident proves that the Indian Army is immune from every legal and moral accountability.

Separatist groups demanding an end to Indian rule have called for a shutdown in Kashmir on Monday to protest what they described as civilian killings.

They were stopped and taken into preventive custody, the officials said.

Minister for Education Syed AltafBukhari told Rising Kashmir that schools and colleges in Kashmir would remain closed till Wednesday.

Restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar, Pulwama and Shopian "as a precautionary measure".

Police intercepted the Malik-led protest march and took the separatist leader and some of his supporters into custody.

Youths clashed in Shopian town with security forces who used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
