Smith's girlfriend, who reported the crime, said he bit her arm before climbing out the window of his residence in San Francisco, according to The Mercury News.

Smith was suspended for one year beginning November 17, 2015, but has yet to be reinstated.

Smith came into the league as a first-round pick out of the University of Missouri in 2011, drafted by the 49ers. Smith pleaded not guilty, and the weapons charges were later reduced. But the off-field issues started mounting the following season when he missed five games to undergo treatment at an inpatient facility following a DUI arrest. Police said he was randomly selected for a secondary screening and became uncooperative, telling a TSA agent that he had a bomb. He agreed to plead no-contest to a hit-and-run charge surrounding an August 6, 2015, incident and was sentenced to 20 days in jail. San Francisco then released him in August 2015 following his fifth run-in with the law regarding another drunken driving arrest.

The rap sheet on Smith is both long and depressing.
