Tonight's Oscar Awards saw a new first in its history.

"As a basketball player, you're really supposed to shut up and dribble, but I'm glad we're doing a little bit more than that", Bryant said in his acceptance speech.

Iconic basketball player Kobe Bryant won an Oscar for his animated short "Dear Basketball" on Sunday night.

During his acceptance speech, Bryant dropped a subtle dig at Fox News host Laura Ingraham, who recently told National Basketball Association players LeBron James and Kevin Durant to "shut up and dribble" after they criticized President Donald Trump in a video on YouTube. "I guess this proves we can do something different", Bryant said with a grin. The film was produced by Glen Keane, an author and an animator with the Disney Studios. Bryant was arrested in 2003 after a 19-year-old accused him of rape, an encounter he described as consensual.

Catalan parliamentary legal experts and the Spanish government as well rejected the notion of him governing from Brussels. He subsequently fled into self-imposed exile in Brussels.

However, Bryant's accuser did not testify and the criminal case fell apart.

The young woman subsequently filed a civil suit against Bryant, which was settled out of court two years after her initial accusation. He applauded players still in the game for making drastic steps in upping the sport.

Awards prediction website Gold Derby had Bryant as the odds-on favourite to win the Oscar for best animated short, but his triumph is unlikely to please everyone. He now has more Oscars than iconic actors such as Sigourney Weaver, Liam Neeson, and Glenn Close who have all been nomiated but have never won.
