As the United States is still gripped by fear and agony post the Florida school shooting massacre, a teacher in Dalton High School, Georgia, barricaded himself inside the classroom and opened fire on Wednesday.

The suspect has been identified as 53-year-old Jesse Randal Davidson, Social Studies teacher at Dalton High School.

Notified by students, the principal tried to unlock the door and enter the room when the teacher suddenly fired a shot out of a window.

On Wednesday at around 11:30 a.m., Dalton City Police tweeted that officers were on the scene of reports of shots fired at Dalton High School located at 1500 Manly Street. School will resume Thursday.

He added that the teacher would face "appropriate charges because this is a very egregious act that took place at the school".

Students can go by the school Thursday to claim their belongings.

Cason commended the work of the school resource officer, who he said convinced Davidson to surrender to authorities, as well as the school for their response to the situation. At some point, the woman became abusive to her children, he said, and two friends approached him saying they would "take care of her for him".

Students of the class took to social media to talk about the episode, including Chondi Chastain, who told the AP that she was planned to have Davidson's class later that evening.

Police in Georgia say a teacher apparently fired a gun inside a classroom and barricaded himself there for about 30 minutes before he was taken into custody.

About 3000 students, many carrying white flowers, wove through hundreds of uniformed police officers to get to class.

Student Emma Jacobs texted her mother while she hid inside a darkened classroom, said her mother, Annmarie Jacobs. In the afternoon, President Donald Trump, who has advocated for arming teachers, convened a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the White House to address gun violence.

Davidson has been a social studies teacher at Dalton High since fall 2004 and is certified to teach history, political science, economics, geography and behavioral science, according to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Davidson then fired his weapon at a window and sent the students and faculty into a frenzy.

Shootings in schools have been increasing in the past with innocent school kids being the victims.

Police have not released an explanation for Davidson's behavior. "I tripped over a chair on my way out and thought I would be trampled, but someone helped me up", she said, according to the LA Times.

Dalton is about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of Atlanta.
