The Washington Post did not agree with President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement policies, where he promised on the campaign trail and once he took office to clamp down on illegal immigration and crimes committed by that segment of the population.

ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan been a vocal opponent of sanctuary declarations by US cities and California.

"We are getting no help from the state of California", Trump continued, claiming the state was protecting members of the violent MS13 gang. The administration has been threatening more - not less - immigration enforcement in California in response to a new state law that sharply limits cooperation with federal authorities.

Homeland Security did not publicly respond to Trump's threat. "California better hold on tight", Homan warned.

Fox News' Todd Starnes tweeted: "Trump says he's thinking about pulling ICE agents from California".

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said 65 percent of arrests from October to December were criminals, compared to 82 percent during the final full three months of the Obama administration. He segued from comments about the El Salvadoran gang MS-13 into a denunciation of California, CNBC reported.

Eighty-six of the 145 had criminal convictions and 39 were arrested based on previous "immigration encounters", ICE said.

In January, the Justice Department threatened more than two dozen cities, counties, and states - including California - with subpoenas and cuts in public-safety funds if they refused to prove that they're sharing information about undocumented immigrants.

"Our state laws work in concert with federal laws".

Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan rejected the criticism, saying that ICE is not conducting indiscriminate raids targeting minorities. Many cities have defied the threats, with lawsuits pending in Chicago, Philadelphia and California over whether the administration has overstepped its authority. He declared that the court was motivated by "political reasons". "We are going to keep our citizens safe and regardless, we are going to keep our citizens safe, believe me". We're creating jobs and driving the nation's economy.

This dispute between the administration and "sanctuary" jurisdictions will ultimately be settled by the Supreme Court.
