United Kingdom police respond to 'major incident' in Leicester

At least four people were critically injured in the city of Leicester, U.K., on Sunday after British police said they were responding to reports of a massive building explosion, which they described as a "major incident".

Members of the emergency services work at the site of an explosion which destroyed a convenience store and a home in Leicester, England.


"All emergency services are now dealing with this", police said in a statement.

"I've never seen anything like this in my life", resident Tom Mellors, 33, told the newspaper.

"We have taken four patients to the Leicester Royal Infirmary at this stage", the ambulance service said on Twitter. "Please avoid the area".

Police for the English city of Leicester say they are responding to a "major incident" after receiving reports of an explosion Sunday.

Dramatic footage and pictures shows raging flames tearing through the convenience store in the north of the East Midlands city.

Emergency response teams rushed to the scene after the explosion at about 7pm local time.

"We've got no indication of what the cause is at this moment", the spokeswoman said. There were no reports of fatalities or injuries. Police said a number of buildings near the burning one were damaged.
