Jaguars, Blake Bortles Finalize 3-Year Extension Worth $54M

The 25-year-old signed a four-year, $20.6m rookie contract out of college.

The Jacksonville Jaguars answered any questions about Blake Bortles' long-term future by signing the quarterback to a three-year, $54 million contract on Saturday night. The extension came together in less than a week.

Don't expect the Jaguars to move on from Bortles unless they can guarantee an upgrade at quarterback.

He is, however, the short-term starter. It will include $26.5 million guaranteed and can be worth as much as $66.5 million with incentives. "Either way, however this went, I don't think it would have had a ton of effect on how I feel". It's been done and I'm excited.

Bortles responded by putting together his best year as a pro.

Bortles has a 21-40 regular-season record as a starter with almost half the victories occurring in 2017 as the Jaguars went 10-6 and won the AFC South.

Aided by that running game and an elite defense, Bortles and the Jags made a run all the way to the AFC Championship Game. He completed a career high 60.2 percent of his passes and threw a career low 13 interceptions.

"Blake's growth and development last season was a key to the success we had as a team", said Tom Coughlin, the Jaguars' executive vice president of football operations. But rather than reel in a truckload of money, the young quarterback is going to be a roaring bargain for his team, which now has more cap flexibility going forward as a result.

Will Trump Ship HR McMaster Back to Afghanistan?
Some defense officials caution that the President could also go as far as not to offer him a fourth star and force him to retire. It's unclear whether Trump will adopt Mattis' recommendations, which the president requested in an August 25 executive order.

He played essentially the entire season without his top receiver Allen Robinson who tore his ACL in the regular season opener at Houston.

So the Jags believe Bortles' best years are ahead. Bortles is elated the team decided not to pursue other options.

Free agency is not the only place where this extension could make an impact on Minnesota's offseason.

Still, Bortles has flaws to fix.

So sorry not sorry to the folks who sarcastically tag Bortles with #goatles on the Internet, or post memes of crying Michael Jordan, reacting to the news. He hasn't missed a snap because of injury and handled constant criticism - including nearly weekly shots from fellow players - in stride. However, is he the man to take the Jaguars to the next level?

Bortles said he never came close to missing a game, but the cortisone injections became less effective as the season progressed. "He's been through a lot and proved a lot last season".

Blake Bortles might have legitimately turned the corner a year ago. "That's his only goal". "He is an ultimate competitor and will do whatever he can to help the team win".
