Nest Cam IQ to get Google Assistant from today

A new software update is on its way to the indoor Nest Cam IQ, and it adds Google Assistant to the gadget.

The assistant is only supposed to be activated with keywords such as "OK, Google", although there have been instances when the Home speaker has been caught listening when it was supposed to be turned off.

Nest originally promised Google Assistant for the Cam IQ back in September, when it launched the outdoor version of the camera alongside a new video doorbell and home security system. You will, however, be able to use the Assistant on the Nest camera to start streaming music or podcasts to a Chromecast-enabled device.

The light-ring around the Nest Cam IQ - now only really used during the setup process - will illuminate when the camera is listening.

"To help protect your privacy and security, the Google Assistant is not included on any of our outdoor products such as Nest Cam IQ Outdoor", the company wrote in a support article.

It should be no surprise to see Nest and Google products working more closely together, as Nest was recently demoted from standalone Alphabet company to Google subsidiary.

In addition to this, Nest's Aware service is seeing a few upgrades.

The Nest Cam IQ indoor security camera is about to get a whole lot smarter. The service, which allows continuous recording and refined vision activity alerts, came with 30-day and 10-day cloud memory banks for $30 per month and $10 per month. The camera can now differentiate between a person and a thing in motion zones and has improved facial recognition.

The $300 Nest Cam will give Google another potentially valuable earhole in its battle with Amazon and Apple to build digital command centers in people's home.
