Ashton Agar picked a three-wicket haul while D'Arcy Short slammed a quick fifty as Australia managed to beat New Zealand by 19 runs by DLS method in the rain-hit Twenty20 International Tri-Series final in Auckland.

Left-arm spinner Agar returned figures of 3-27 in four overs as the Aussies restricted the Kiwis to a modest total of 150/9 in their 20 overs after home captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first. If Ross Taylor hadn't eked out 43 off 38 balls, they would barely have escaped first gear.

The 72-run opening platform set by D'Arcy Short and David Warner in nine overs set Australia on the path to triumph after a stellar bowling display.

When Australia needed 31 off the final 32 deliveries, rain once again arrived but this time did not relent for any further play and with the visitors ahead int he DLS target, they went on to win the encounter easily.

But Warner says it's up to Smith, who admitted to being burnt out after a gruelling summer, to decide if he wants to continue leading Australia in all three formats.

New Zealand kept the team that lost by two runs to England in Hamilton on Sunday, but still managed to qualify for the series final on run rate. However, the rain stopped after a 20-minute spell but the officials announced that the ground is too wet to resume before the cut-off time, awarding Australia a 19-run win under the Duckworth-Lewis system. When Short mistimed a steepler to Mark Chapman at long-on off Colin Munro, New Zealand pounced.

David Warner's side continued their unbeaten run on Friday night with a spectacular five-wicket victory over New Zealand in Auckland.

"Through the middle we didn't assess as well as we could have", he said.

It looked as though momentum was swinging towards the hosts, but Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch steadied the ship, taking Australia to 100 by the 13th over before finishing on 121-3 as rain fatally struck for a second time.

With Andrew Tye the leading wicket-taker for the series, with ten wickets at 17, Australia got a fantastic spread of contributions with the ball.
