Amid the dark déja vu of the 18th school shooting of 2018 so far, while Parkland, Florida, and the rest of the country mourned yet again, President Trump tweeted the requisite "prayers and condolences".

During his brief, televised statement, Trump said he wanted to work to "create a culture in our country that embraces the dignity of life", a phrase likely to resonate with his conservative base. Trump is right: We shouldn't have to fear that our kids will die at school-but we do.

Mr Trump was immediately criticised for focusing particularly on mental health almost a year to the day since he signed a law revoking an Obama-era initiative that made it harder for people with mental illness to buy a gun.

The late night host became teary-eyed describing Wednesday's Florida shooting at that resulted in 17 deaths.

When Trump meets with governors later this month, let's hope he listens to him.

But Attorney General Jeff Sessions did mention guns in a speech to a group of sheriffs Thursday. "Thank you, and God bless you all".

Trump had been planning on spending the weekend in Florida. That is a ideal example of the common sense you told us you were going to bring to the White House. After a shooting at a Texas church in November left more than two dozen dead, the president said, "This isn't a guns situation".

To Trump's point of the shooter being "mentally disturbed", Trump signed a Republican bill a year ago that makes it easier for people who are mentally ill to purchase guns. There were also declines in non-gun-related suicides and homicides, the study found, meaning researchers can't determine whether the laws can be credited with driving the declines. Earlier Thursday, he suggested the suspect was "mentally disturbed".

Trump says the entire nation "with one heavy heart" is praying for the victims and their families. It is at least the eighth shooting at a USA school this year.

A vigil was held Thursday in the wake of this week's horrific school shooting in Florida, where at least 1,000 attendees mourned the 17 victims.

Another senseless shooting. This time at a high school in Parkland, Florida, where a gunman, a former student, opened fire yesterday again. Cruz had countless magazines and had one AR-15 rifle.

Mallis recalled to attendees how shooting victim Alaina Petty's surviving brother saved his life.

But some of the parents, survivors and others affected by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were more interested in firm action to prevent future assaults than a presidential visit.

Cruz had escaped after the bloodbath but was caught an hour later in the neighbouring Coral Spring city and charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. One option was to have chief of staff John Kelly, who has come under intense pressure for his handling of the Porter matter, be part of the briefing, according to two White House officials not authorized to publicly discuss internal deliberations.
