Now that you have an understanding of what smart replies are, you should also know that a small R&D team at Google is working to bring this feature to all of your favorite messaging clients.

The Reply app is from Area 120, a group at Google focused on quickly iterated experimental products that the public are able to test. If you get a message with more urgent cues like "We're waiting for you". But as a hint of how it would work, Area 120 said the plan is to offer Smart Replies right into the notifications tab, supposedly when the user receives a notification from the above-mentioned third-party chat apps.

At the core, Reply is an add-on for any messaging app, not a standalone messaging experience. The new app also includes other automated features such as a Do Not Disturb mode, and a Vacation Responder.

Google's internal incubator, Area 120, is working hard to incorporate this functionality into chat apps such as Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Android Messages (for all carriers), Skype, Twitter DMs, and Slack.

The great thing is that you don't actually need to have been formally invited by Google to request access to the Reply app. But the feature has not been made available to all Android Messages users as of yet. Reply will make sure to get the user's attention even when their phone is in silent mode.

Beyond automated replies, Reply is getting brand-new features that make it even more aware of certain situations.

The country has been since split between rival governments in the east and the west, each backed by an array of militias. It has since imposed strict military control on the city and other parts of eastern Libya under its control.

The replies take user's current location into consideration in order to craft a correct response.

It's also very early in its development cycle, so you shouldn't expect Reply to launch anytime soon.

"One of the many projects that we're working on within Area 120 is Reply, which suggests smart replies right in notifications from various chat apps", a Google spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Android Messages has already started rolling support for the new feature but only for select users.

According to reports by Android Police, Google's experimental lab called Area 120 has developed a new system called Reply that it is testing with volunteers.

The project is still in very early stages of development, and not much is known about it, other than the fact that it exists.
