President Trump warns of 'last chance' looming to pass immigration deal

The order from federal District Court Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis in NY comes as Congress debates legislation that would allow up to 1.8 million undocumented immigrants brought to the children, known as "Dreamers", to gain legal status rather than face possible deportation. "Because that conclusion was erroneous, the decision to end the DACA programme can not stand".

Democrats adamantly oppose Trump's plan, particularly its barring of legal immigrants from sponsoring their parents or siblings to live in the US.

The administration gave Dreamers until October 5th to reapply for their permits.

Mr. Trump had said the program was illegal and announced the phaseout, saying it was up to Congress to come up with a more firm legal status for Dreamers.

Garaufis cautioned his ruling does not hold that DACA's rescission is unlawful, and left open the possibility that the government may legitimately revoke the policy at some point in the future. Despite acknowledging the court's own sympathies towards those who were unable to apply for the program before then, "it can not say that plaintiffs have demonstrated either that these individuals would be irreparably harmed without injunctive relief or that the balance of equities favors these individuals to the same extent it favors existing DACA beneficiaries".

Sixteen states, including NY, and Washington DC sued the Trump administration in September to block the administration's move to end the programme.

Karen Tumlin, legal director of the National Immigration Law Center, said the ruling shows that how Trump ended DACA "was not just immoral, it was unlawful".

One killed, 37 wounded by twin mosque bombing in Libya's Benghazi
The country has been since split between rival governments in the east and the west, each backed by an array of militias. It has since imposed strict military control on the city and other parts of eastern Libya under its control.

The key to the state AG case is that the Trump administration's attempts to end DACA are procedurally flawed. "Based on its review of the record before it, the court concludes that defendants have not done so".

The earlier ruling by Judge William Alsup in California is already being appealed by the Justice Department.

"They didn't want tax cuts", Trump said.

Senators who have pushed for a debate on DACA have known the President is not likely to support a compromise in advance, but have hoped passing something by a wide margin could encourage him to get on board - which will be necessary for the House to act. "I don't know how far he'll go, but I do think he'd like to fix it".

The ruling comes three days before the USA supreme court is set to consider at a private conference whether to hear a Trump administration appeal of Alsup's ruling.

The Trump administration argued that the California injunction means that DACA recipients are not facing imminent harm.

The administration is asking the justices to hear arguments and rule by the end of their term in June.
