Ramaphosa, one of the richest black South Africans, has had a hard relationship with Zuma since he left his business career and returned to full-time politics five years ago, and became deputy president in 2014.

Zuma expects to be subpoenaed to testify before the Zondo Commission into state capture and may very well face criminal charges relating to the arms deal corruption and Schabir Shaik soon.

Ramaphosa has been lobbying for Zuma to resign and has said he hopes to conclude talks with the president "in coming the interests of the country".

"But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die", said Mandela, who died in 2013 at the age of 95.

In his speech, the deputy president said the government will wage a "relentless war against corruption and mismanagement of the resources of our country" and that the justice system will punish the guilty. The two were widely expected to hold another meeting this weekend, which will signal a final decision on Zuma's future.

Ramaphosa met with Zuma on Tuesday, after he refused to step down during a meeting with the top six on Sunday.

Such a meeting could have exacerbated divisions with the party that has led South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, and Ramaphosa said his private discussions with Zuma were aimed at minimizing discord.

Ramaphosa, a 65-year-old lawyer and one of the richest black South Africans, has pledged to revive the flagging economy and clamp down on the corruption that Zuma's critics say have become synonymous with his rule.

Mantashe said Ramaphosa was dealing with a "complex situation", however, officials were agreed on the "end game". And because our people want this matter to be finalised, the NEC will be doing exactly that. "While preserving the value of money is our main mandate, our goal is to be a bastion of institutional strength, contributing to a stable and prosperous economy that serves the well-being of all South Africans, and guided in part by Madiba's values", said Lesetja Kganyago, South African Reserve Bank Governor.

"South Africans must appreciate that the leadership of the ANC is hard at work. Don't follow emotion", he said.

Unlike Zuma, Ramaphosa was not driven into exile for opposing apartheid, which some of the party's more hardline members hold against him.

The ANC is trying to wrap up a deal for Zuma to resign so Ramaphosa can restore investor confidence and public support for the ANC as it gears up for the vote.

The uneasiness was heightened after the state of the nation address was for the first time postponed indefinitely last week.
