Once the time on Paul's objection ran out, and after the government technically was shut down, senators strolled back into the chamber at 1am, many of them dressed casually and some looking exhausted.

After a brief government shutdown that lasted into the early hours of Friday morning, Congress passed an expansive budget deal that adds hundreds of billions of dollars to the budget for military and domestic programs, according to The Washington Post.

Prospects for avoiding the temporary shutdown were dashed when Republican Sen.

The spending deal lifts budget caps to increase defense and domestic spending over the next two years, but will increase the national deficit by roughly $320 billion.

The U.S. government is shutting down at midnight as the Senate went into recess and missed a midnight deadline to pass a short-term funding bill.

Different groups are working to prepare legislation for the immigration effort, including conservatives who are working on a legislative version of President Donald Trump's proposed framework and a group of bipartisan senators who have been meeting almost daily to try to reach agreement on the issue.

The package is not to the liking of some House Democrats because it doesn't address immigration.

As the clock hit midnight, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney immediately issued an order to close non-essential government operations.

House Democrats said Pelosi appealed to members to vote against the budget bill if Ryan did not provide a stronger commitment on immigration, though leaders did not formally whip the vote. "Once we get this budget agreement done - and we will get this done for no matter how long it takes for us to stay here - we will focus on bringing that debate to this floor and finding a solution".

McConnell said the bill had required "extensive negotiation", and while "no one would suggest its flawless, . we worked hard to find common ground and stay focused on serving the American people".
