Joe Biden says Republicans will 'do anything to protect Trump'

Biden also made some strong statements over the President's recent attacks on the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Biden says too many Republicans were silent as Trump gave "comfort and safe harbor" to neo-Nazis and white nationalists last summer in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Biden also said that Trump should avoid sitting down with special counsel Robert Mueller - who is leading the investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation - quipping that "the president has some difficulty with precision".

"Well, let me tell you, he's a joke", Biden fired back.

Democrats are heading into the November elections with an energized party base, an unpopular president to rail against and a growing wave of GOP retirements.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders attempted to clarify Trump's comments by telling reporters Tuesday that the President was "clearly joking" at the time.

Biden continued, "What do you think they're thinking in Moscow?" Biden said the attacks were without precedent and hit the entire bureau.

Biden also pointed out that former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton were relative unknowns before they were elected, and a similar surprise candidate could arise ahead of 2020. Biden said. "If I could look in the mirror in two and a half, two years, and walk away knowing I'm not walking away because I'm afraid or I don't have the nerve to try to do the job or I don't want to make the effort, then I will happily walk away".

"There's a lot of new folks that potentially are coming up here", Biden said.
