Ms. Kelly also invoked Ms. Fonda's nickname from the cultural wars of five decades ago - "Hanoi Jane" - adding that it had been bestowed upon the actress because she had tried to "shame American troops".

At one point, Kelly launched into a discussion on ageism in Hollywood, which she then segued into asking Fonda about her history with plastic surgery, saying, "I read that you said you felt - you're not proud to admit that you've had work done".

Kelly went months without responding to Fonda's clear issue with the question, but ultimately made a decision to react to what she called Fonda's "poor-me routine" because Fonda won't let it go.

All this started in September when Fonda, 80, went on Kelly's show, accompanied by Robert Redford, 81, to talk about their new film, Our Souls at Night.

The TV host apparently was sent into full-feud mode by Fonda's appearance last week on the "Today" show with "Grace and Frankie" co-star Lily Tomlin.

Four months after that awkward interview in which Megyn Kelly asked Jane Fonda to tell her about her plastic surgery, Fonda said of course she'd go on her show again-but only if Kelly ups her game.

On Jan. 22, 2018, Kelly finally "broke her silence" by dramatically stopping her show for a segment called "A word on Jane Fonda".

Kelly then rolled a series of clips showing Fonda openly discussing the benefits of plastic surgery on other talk shows. "Look, I gave her the chance to empower other women, young and old, on a subject she purports to know well, and she rejected it". "That's OK. But I have no regrets about the question. After all, this is a woman whose name is synonymous with outrage", Kelly continued. Fonda has apologized for being photographed with anti-aircraft guns but not for the trip itself, where she criticized USA war policy in the capital of the country that the US was fighting.

Fonda, who has been open about her beauty treatments in the past, later admitted she was taken aback by Megyn's "weird" line of questioning, insisting it was just "the wrong time and place".

Somehow, Kelly found a way to loop back around to the original issue at hand, Fonda's unwillingness to discuss her plastic surgery, which Kelly referred to as her "moral indignation".

"Everybody in the control room gasped when Megyn brought up Hoda's 'dark period, ' because many viewers likely won't know exactly what she was referring to". "When she first complained, I chose to say nothing".

But Kelly on Monday not only defended her interview with Fonda, but questioned the actress' patriotism.

"Even she had to apologize years later for that gun picture - but not for the rest of it".

Megyn Kelly Today airs weekdays at 9 a.m. on NBC.
