Recode: Amazon increasing monthly Prime cost by 18%

Amazon is boosting the price of its monthly Prime membership fees for new and existing members by almost 20 percent.

Amazon also offers an $8.99 monthly subscription option for Prime Video, which provides access to its original and licensed programming. With the price increase, the monthly option will now equal slightly less than $156 for a year.

Amazon said the price increase does not affect the annual membership option, which will remain at $99.

Amazon Prime's standalone video membership will continue at its $8.99 monthly price. But is it worth a 20% price hike? Students will see a monthly bump of $1 to $6.49, while the yearly $49 fee stays the same.

Amazon is hiking up the price of monthly Prime memberships from $10.99 to $12.99.

A study released a year ago by researcher Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) estimates that there are 90 million USA -based Amazon Prime subscribers.

Getting people to sign up to Amazon Prime fares well to the company, the CIRP study found. If you're an existing customer and you plan to renew your monthly subscription, the new prices kick in after February 18, 2018, according to Amazon.

A stable subscriber base makes it much easier to market things that further draw customers into the ecosystem; your Alexas, your Fire tablets, etc. That's nearly double the $700 non-members spend on Amazon each year.
