East Coast Braces for Deep Freeze Following Winter Storm

Forecasters are warning the same system could soon strengthen into a "bomb cyclone" as it rolls up the East Coast, bringing hurricane-force winds, coastal flooding and up to a foot of snow. "Use caution and stay safe".

"This rapidly intensifying East Coast storm will produce strong, damaging winds - possibly resulting in downed trees, power outages and coastal flooding", the National Weather Service tweeted Wednesday. Up to two thirds of the flights out of the main airports in the New York region were being cancelled on January 4, according to a New York Daily News report.

This sort of winter hurricane formed because of the serendipitous convergence of several factors, including a blast of freezing air from the North Pole that, right off the southeast coast of the United States, has come into contact with warm ocean waters carried by the Gulf Stream.

This new wave of cold weather this weekend will be close to the level of cold experienced at the end of 2017 and start of 2018 in the Midwest, central Appalachians and interior South, according to forecasters. When winds from a storm like that blow from the northeast to land it's called a nor'easter.

Officials issued storm warnings for parts of Florida and Georgia, the eastern Carolinas, southeast Virginia and the cities of Savannah, Ga.; Charleston and Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Wilmington, N.C.; and Norfolk, Va.
