United States city San Francisco to receive extra federal funds to combat homelessness

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today awarded almost $23.8 million to support 95 homeless housing and service programs in Wisconsin. Long Beach will receive about $8.19 million, Pasadena just over $3.25 million and Glendale slightly above $2.41 million.

The remaining $1.7 million went to Washoe County in the northern part of the state.

"HUD stands with our local partners who are working each and every day to house and serve our most vulnerable neighbors", HUD Secretary Ben Carson said.

Organizations based in Chicago will receive the most in funding, with $68.3 million, and programs in Cook County will receive roughly $12.1 million. Behind California comes NY (579 programs and $200 million in funding), IL (418 programs and $109 million in funding), Pennsylvania (519 programs and $102 million in funding), and OH (316 programs and $95 million in funding).

Heartland Alliance and Thresholds, which both focus on connecting people to medical care and permanent housing, were among the recipients in Chicago.

Orange County's number of homeless also rose to 4,792 in 2017, up from 4,452 in 2015, according to the 2017 Point-in-Time Count & Survey.

In December, the department reported an increase in homelessness across the country, particularly among those experiencing long-term chronic homelessness.

Matthew Doherty, Executive Director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, said, "Continuums of Care are critical leaders in the work to end homelessness nationwide". "We know how to end homelessness".

According to HUD's statistics, last year, there were nearly 554,000 homeless Americans, an increase of.7 percent from last year with much of that increase taking place in California.

HUD-funded strategies have led to a 22 percent reduction in the homeless population in Western New York since 2010, according to Regional Administrator Lynne Patton.
