Report Says Huawei Failed to Reach Smartphone Sales Deal With AT&T

Amid reports of ongoing talks between the two companies, AT&T has announced Huawei phones will not be part of its handset offerings.

Rumors about AT&T selling the Huawei Mate 10 began surfacing a few months ago, and Huawei recently confirmed that its flagship would be coming to a U.S. carrier in 2018. Huawei's CES 2018 keynote is happening tomorrow, and it'll be interesting to see what the company has to say.

The news is a huge blow to Huawei, now the third largest smartphone maker in the world after Apple and Samsung, and will roll back the company's plan to establish a larger presence in the United States starting this year. However, the failure to secure a contract with AT&T or fellow USA giant Verizon drastically limits the Chinese company's growth in the American market. In that letter the committees raised concerns about Huawei's plans to launch consumer products in the U.S. Huawei and fellow Chinese firm ZTE were both considered potential threats to security of the U.S. and in 2012 the House intelligence committee said that both firms should be barred from any major acquisitions or mergers in the U.S. That may be good news for consumers, but that not might bode well for Huawei.

In the recent past, Huawei has only sold its handsets in the USA through its own website, through and other online retailers, giving its phones less market exposure and making it impossible for buyers to examine the devices before making a purchase.

Officially, neither Huawei nor AT&T ever confirmed that a deal was even taking place and there's certainly no reason to expect that they would comment on this failed arrangement.

The Chinese manufacturer has been attempting to crack America without support from any of the United States networks and the AT&T agreement would have catapulted it into gaze of mainstream smartphone shoppers in the U.S. for the first time.

Currently, it is trailing behind Samsung and Apple and for those that do not know, penetrating the selling through carriers was a golden opportunity that did not seem to take form for the tech firm.

A report from The Information claims that the same "political pressure" situation happened here.

U.S. lawmakers last month sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission to review Huawei's smartphone business following concerns the equipment could be used for spying, the Journal reported. However, Huawei will continue on its determined campaign to pierce through the lucrative North American market. The latter's mobile devices will not sell through a USA telco anytime soon, but Android fans need not fret.
