A Washington state sheriff's deputy who was the first to respond to a 911 call about a home invasion was shot and killed late Sunday - and a suspect is still on the loose, authorities said.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer identified the deputy as 34-year-old Daniel McCartney, of Yelm. It's being reported by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office that the shooting occurred at a home in the Spanaway area. The deputy was shot while running after the suspects within 10 minutes of responding to that call for help.

They alerted deputies, and one arrived about six minutes later. He began to pursue a suspect on foot and shots were fired at the deputy, striking him.

"There's a sadness that will be felt and should be felt in the community", said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor. A male suspect was found dead at the scene.
