Superb Svitolina Storms To Brisbane Title

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina got the ideal boost ahead of the Australian Open by lifting the Brisbane International women's singles title with a 6-2, 6-1 win over qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich here, Saturday.

Sevastova would immediately answer as from 30-all Sasnovich double-faulted and a backhand error put the set back on serve at 4-3. She ended the year ranked sixth in the world, but will climb two places when the new rankings are released on Monday and will go into the year's first Grand Slam as the fourth seed.

In her ninth tour-level semifinal, Sevastova surrendered to her first defeat against a Belarusian opponent. The Ukranian raced to a 5-2 lead in the second but Pliskova was not ready to surrender and saved a match point before levelling at 5-5. Svitolina pounced, breaking her again and wrapping up the set in 31 minutes.

She will play Elina Svitolina for the title.

First set Svitolina failed - three times Elina lost her serve, losing 10 of the 12 draws the second ball. The returner won just five points in the opening five games before Sevastova built a 15-40 lead in the sixth game, only to see Sasnovich fight off the first break point with an acute volley victor and the second courtesy of another error from the Latvian.
