Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Ankara is "tired" of its sluggish European Union membership process, noting that it can not indefinitely be requesting to join the bloc.

"Maybe this will force us to take a decision", he said, without specifying what that might be.

"And it's now been 54 years that Turkey has been waiting in the antechamber of the EU", Erdogan said. "When it comes to saying why, the European Union is not really capable of giving reasons".

Earlier, Turkey's undersecretariat for defense industries and Franco-Italian EUROSAM signed an anti-missile defense system agreement.

France and Turkish officials also signed defence, banking and commercial deals, including the planned sale of 25 Airbus A330s to Turkish Airlines.

Turkey has been seeking to join the European Union for decades, but leaders both at home and in Europe have expressed increasing doubts over the progress following mass arrests and sackings after the failed coup in 2016.

"Sensitivity regarding FETO members is very important", he said, adding that FETO and PKK members are institutionalizing in the country.

French President Emmanuel Macron has told his Turkish counterpart that there is now no chance of Turkey becoming a member of the European Union.

He said France believes that Turkey's future should be in Europe.

During the visit, which was organised to improve relations between France and Turkey, the two leaders also discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, fight against terror, and the war in Syria. A dozen demonstrators, mainly ethnic Kurds, later tried to reach the presidential Elysee palace, but police pushed them back.
