Amazon and Google are expected to remain the leaders with their Echo and Home devices, but will feel some heat from new entrants to the market.

Hisense isn't the only major TV manufacturer to announce smart assistant integration in its latest lineup. Yes, you heard that right.

The market in China will remain muted under the dominance of Amazon and Google, though Alibaba, JD.com and Xiaomi have already launched smart speakers to test the waters.

Amazon said it sold "millions" of Echo Dot speakers over the holiday period and it was the best-selling product (by any manufacturer in any category) on Amazon during that time.

Alexa's smart home skills aren't just for turning on the lights or locking your door these days - now, they can help fulfill your culinary ambitions. Today we are excited to introduce cooking capabilities as part of the Smart Home Skill API. But now with Alexa support included, users will be able to control not only the content on the TV but the hardware on the device. "Amazon probably wants the Echo device family to stand on its own as a consumer electronics line, while supporting the greater mission of succeeding as an online retailer".

Customers are increasingly using voice user interfaces (VUIs) as a hands-free way to manage their lives, and hands-free control is especially valuable when cooking. Some of the highlights will be shopping, using smart home devices and much more. Instead of pressing umpteen buttons, you can simply ask Alexa to "defrost 3lbs of chicken". Up until now companies had to create custom skills for Alexa to command their appliances. The skill enables customers to easily configure, start, and operate their connected Whirlpool microwaves.

The biggest limitation here is on the appliance side: even if you have a smart microwave or a smart oven - and most people don't - it also needs to be updated to support this feature.

All in all, this is an interesting development in the technology sphere. The tools are available from Amazon for developers now, but we'll still have to wait a while to see compatible appliances.
