Chelsea are on the brink of clinching the signing of Ross Barkley after making a new bid for the Everton midfielder. Reports also claim that the deal could be announced as soon as Friday. Barkley, 24, hasn't played a minute of football for his boyhood club this season and his contract was due to expire in six months' time, meaning he could leave on a Bosman.

That delay looks likely to cost Barkley's boyhood club £20m in transfer revenue although Everton risk losing the England global for nothing in the summer and will reluctantly accept a cut-price move. Tottenham Hotspur were believed to be in pole position to land the English midfielder with Mauricio Pochettino hoping to pair him in a deeper role with Eric Dier.

With Barkley's current contract set to expire at the end of this season, Everton look to have chose to cash in on him now rather than allow him to leave on a free transfer in the summer.

Book, who entered the game in the second quarter , was 14 of 19 for 164 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The second miss came from Jack Gonsoulin from 37 yards with 2:00 left after LSU had a first-and-10 at the Irish 19.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce said on Thursday the club had been resigned to losing Barkley for some time. Antonio Conte was looking to reinforce his midfield with a condensed schedule ahead.

Sources close to the situation have told me that while Barkley is disappointed that Spurs did not make a suitable offer, he feels it shows that Chelsea wanted him more, which is why he is happy to commit to the champions instead.
