Minimum wage hike goes into effect in NY, NJ

At the time the law passed, the country's first minimum wage was $0.25 per hour.

Maine's minimum wage will increase to $10 an hour in the new year thanks to a law approved by voters in 2016.

"This is the fourth time that the Fine Gael-led Government has introduced an increase to the minimum wage since it was cut in 2010".

The new minimum wage would result in an Irish worker taking home a gross income of €1,613.95 per month, and €1,521.57 after tax. Businesses have stated that if they pay less than $15 an hour, they have retention issues. Tipped employees must be paid at least $5 an hour by employers. Senator Rob Portman has said he supports the raising of minimum wage, but has said in the past, that raising it too high or fast could kill jobs.

However, the minimum wage increases only apply to restaurants that are part of a chain of 30 or more locations nationwide.

Minimum wage increases are expected to have a "ripple effect" in OH, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer, as businesses increase wages for entry level employees, they typically also raise the wages of those in the upper tiers, such as supervisors and managers.

Assemblyman Andy Goodell, R-Jamestown, said many economic studies have been done that show there will be a loss of entry-level jobs as the wages in NY state increase.

Starting Monday, small companies - those with 25 or fewer employees - will have to pay workers at least $10.50 an hour, up from $10. The minimum wage covers fast-food workers at more than 130 chains operating in NY, including Arby's, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Dairy Queen, Domino's Pizza, KFC, McDonalds, Panera Bread, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Subway, Taco Bell and Wendy's.
