Arctic Blast expected into the New Year

That was the coldest December on record with an average temperature of 18.1 degrees!

Arctic air is settlings in and wind will be picking up. Scattered flurries will be possible throughout the day, but no accumulation is expected. Luckily, there isn't a major amount of precipitation in the forecast, but there could be just enough to lead to icy overpasses and bridges. Also, be cautious of icy roads.

Rain chances increase to 50 percent Sunday when temperatures are expected to start dropping significantly throughout the metropolitan area. Wind chills will drop into the 20's New Year's Day and night.

- If you're planning to go outside to ring in the new year this weekend in the District, you'll want to bundle up as a brutal cold front continues to sweep over the region. "By morning, the actual air temperature should drop to about 13 below". Our morning lows should be in the low 20s, but with a breezy north wind, it will feel like the teens.

The last time the temperature remained BELOW freezing for a week or more was in February of 2014. Right now we are going with a morning low of 17, which is subject to change.

Parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin are struggling to reach temperatures in the low teens during the day, Kottlowski said. These areas should warm above freezing Tuesday morning between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. More locations should climb above freezing Wednesday afternoon.
