Google launched Assistant with the first generation Pixels past year. For those that are regular users of video calling and also have an Android phone as a daily driver this might be the best time to install Google's Phone app.

Google Assistant for Android Lollipop smartphones have begun rolling out, while the roll out for tablets will commence next week. Brazil, Germany, Italy, Japan and South Korea are few other countries getting Assistant on phones running Android Lollipop.

Google just paved the way for users of older Android phones and tablets to use Google Assistant even though the update is available in select regions.

Google acknowledges that 26% of all Android devices are still based on Lollipop, the Android 5.0 version launched in 2014, while around 30% run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. However, it will be rolled out to other regions like any other new Google feature or app.

Both the companies are in a race to sell smart speakers (powered by their respective voice assistant) during the Holiday season.

Meanwhile, at the Google for India event earlier, Google VP of Engineering Shashidhar Thakur had stated that the prime aim of developing Google Go was to help new smartphone users "come on the Internet", and at the same time help them access the Web easily.

The app description on Play Store states, "Google Maps Go, the lighter version of the original Google Maps app". It will also be available in Spanish but in the USA and Mexico, besides Spain of course. Now Google assistant can also recognize songs. Eligible English language tablet users in the US will begin receiving the update "over the coming week".
