Obama Beats Trump on Twitter With More Than Double the Following

Former President Barack Obama wrote three of the most retweeted posts on Twitter in 2017.

By contrast, Mr Trump did not have a tweet that was one of the top-ten most retweeted or liked of the year despite the volume of Twitter messages he issues, often in early-morning bursts, denouncing rivals or weighing in on policy issues and current events.

Obama also had three of the top 10 most-retweeted tweets of 2017, according to several media reports.

Twitter has released its annual list of the most popular tweets on the platform, and in a year when so much coverage of the United States president Donald Trump has been dominated by his Twitter activity, it is his predecessor Barack Obama who dominates.

He also came in No. 1 for top tweeted US elected officials, with Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan taking second and third.

The same Twitter post was the second most re-tweeted of the year, behind a tweet from a teenager trying to win a year's supply of chicken nuggets from fast food chain Wendy's.

The top 10 most tweeted-about news outlets of the year are Fox News, CNN, New York Times, MSNBC, Washington Pist, The Hill, NBC news, ABC, Politico and AP. The former president tweeted: "It's been the honor of my life to serve you".

Meanwhile, the band Linkin Park had the sixth-most retweeted tweet with a picture of lead singer Chester Bennington, who committed suicide on July 20. "You made me a better leader and a better man", was another most popular tweets of 2017.

Ariana Grande's tweet after the Manchester Arena bombing in May was the fourth most retweeted globally. Give it hell, John.
