According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, two students were shot in an incident that took place Tuesday afternoon outside Graham-Kapowsin High School, Bethel School District.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said it was not believed the suspects were from the area.

Two neighboring schools also were in lockdown after the shooting but were reopened earlier than the high school and their students were released, said Bethel School District officials. Troyer said one of the two victims may have been a bystander who had no knowledge of the fight. The other student was found inside a locker room. "One was in a parking lot of the football field". Officials say the two wounded male students ran back onto the Graham-Kapowsin campus after being shot.

Both victims, aged 16, were taken to Tacoma General Hospital with gunshot wounds and were expected to survive after undergoing emergency surgeries. Officers are still investigating.

The shooting happened about 2:30 p.m. near the school, 22100 108th Ave.
