150-Acre Skirball Fire Spurs Evacuations, Freeway Closures In California

Los Angeles fire authorities closed down the freeway shortly thereafter, disrupting the morning commute for hundreds of thousands of people traveling between Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.

Residents living south of Mulholland, east of the 405, north of Sunset Boulevard, and west of Roscomare Road were told to leave their homes.

Stewart said officers from the Los Angeles Police Department were arriving in the neighborhood to handle any potential evacuation orders.

As firefighters tenaciously battled flames from several major fires that all flared in just 24 hours in Southern California, animal lovers anxious about their pet's safety with as many as 150,000 people under mandatory evacuation orders. Roads affected include Casiano Road, Moraga Drive and Linda Flora Drive.

Nearly 200,000 people lost power in Ventura County on Tuesday, making it challenging for the 1,100 firefighters to put out the flames. Before the freeway closing, a morning commuter captured terrifying footage of fire surrounding the freeway.

Some 105 patients were being voluntarily evacuated from Mountain View Convalescent Center on Fenton Ave in Sylmar, said LAFD, noting that they had no reported injuries from any civilians. The 405 North freeway remains closed between the 10 and the 101 freeways, making it challenging to access some local businesses. Some area restaurants chose to remain open amid the fire and smoke-filled skies, while others closed shop for the day.
