"Last night at three in the morning, I got a call", he told a crowd of about 400 supporters.

Trump has been publicly dismissive of Comey and of special counsel Robert Mueller's continuing investigation, and was often generous in his appraisal of Flynn, except to say his adviser could not stay on the job after misleading his vice president.

But absent from Trump's remarks - at least at the first event - was any mention of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

The president told reporters there was "no collusion" between his campaign and the Russians, then tweeted, "nothing to hide!"

According to the Washington Post, Strzok's actions may have influenced other investigations, such as the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's illegal e-mail use.

The president has also singled out the F.B.I.'s deputy director, Andrew McCabe, whose wife in 2015 ran for a State Senate seat in Virginia as a Democrat and accepted almost $500,000 in contributions from the political organization of Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a longtime friend of the Clintons. Strzok was present during Clinton's July 2016 interview with the Federal Bureau of Investigation about her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, according to an unclassified summary of the interview commonly referred to as an Federal Bureau of Investigation 302 form. In late October, the GOP chairmen of the House Judiciary and House Oversight Committees announced a joint inquiry into the FBI's handling of the Clinton email server investigation.

The DOJ is investigating the Strzok-led FBI investigation of the Clinton email scandal. Information about it was leaked to the media in January, after Trump's inauguration.

Page reportedly left Mueller's team in July and no longer works with McCabe, while Strzok was removed from Mueller's team in August and subsequently reassigned to the FBI's HR department in an apparent demotion.

Mr Kushner's lawyer did not respond to multiple requests for comment. "The OIG has been reviewing allegations involving communications between certain individuals, and will report its findings regarding those allegations promptly upon completion of the review of them", the inspector general's office said in a statement provided to NPR.

Inspector general Michael Horowitz is leading a broader examination of the FBI's investigation of Clinton's emails. At about 2 a.m., Mr. Strzok wrote an email to Mr. Comey and scheduled it to send at 6 a.m.
