Microsoft to Spend Billions Modernizing Redmond Campus

In a blog post, Microsoft said it was recommitting to the 500-acre campus in Redmond, Washington that has been its home for three decades. Now, we can add Microsoft to the growing list of companies looking to spruce up their campus.

Microsoft says the investment will involve approximately 2,500 construction jobs and will benefit the overall Puget Sound community, which includes the Washington cities of Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Everett. Microsoft now has 125 buildings at its campus, and once the project is complete this will rise to 131 buildings. Under the plan, the company will tear down 12 of the buildings now used by employees and build 18 new facilities in their place that are expected to be up to twice as tall. However, for Microsoft, which has been restructuring its operations lately, this new development is a sign that the company is regaining confidence under the new chief executive Satya Nadella. The space will be divided into what it calls "team neighborhoods". The effect, at least from the concept video, makes it look far more like a university campus than Apple's new "Infinite Loop" campus, where all the focus is on one huge building.

The transformation at Redmond - where the company has been for 30 years - will include retail and sports facilities, including soccer and cricket spaces, which will also be available to those living nearby. Those staffers will have access to new open work spaces in the planned buildings, another 6.7 million square feet of renovated offices split up among 12 existing facilities and a variety of amenities. Instead, the firm envisions the new campus as a place filled with open spaces and plenty of light.

"As Microsoft continues to create the tools and services that are shaping the future of work, we can't think of a better time to modernize our campus into a model of ingenuity and innovation". The bridge will also tie into a forthcoming Link Light Rail station set to arrive in 2023. The layout of those buildings is so confusing that employees used to joke that finding an office was an intelligence test to see if you were fit to work at Microsoft.
