The movie has received 170 consecutive positive reviews from critics as of Tuesday morning, earning no "rotten" ratings and surpassing Toy Story 2 as the best-reviewed movie on the site. According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Toy Story 2" - released in 1999 - set the record with 163 Fresh Reviews.

Lady Bird has just done something that's never been done before.

"Lady Bird", Greta Gerwig's coming-of-age film about a teen with a penchant for Dave Matthews Band, puffing on fiberglass and throwing herself out of the occasional moving vehicle has broken a Rotten Tomatoes record.

Other movies with a 100 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes include Citizen Kane, Singin' in the Rain, Seven Samurai and Twelve Angry Men. The movie now boasts a rare 100% score with 173 reviews and counting on an average rating of 8.9/10.

In the case of Gerwig's Lady Bird, it was given a wide release and thus had to adhere to that higher standard, which it leapt over with grace.

Only two other films in the websites history have managed to achieve a 100 per cent positive score with over 100 reviews - 2008 documentary Man on Wire, and Isabelle Hupperts drama Things to Come a year ago. The controversy over the delayed Justice League score was a huge sign of that influence - as well as the blockbuster's disappointing reception at the box office following the tepid critical reactions and Tomatometer score. With this new Rotten Tomatoes record, the path forward for studio A24 (who won Best Picture past year with Moonlight) is pretty clear, and I wouldn't be surprised if Lady Bird ended up with nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Laurie Metcalf), and Best Original Screenplay. It's well worth the hype.
