The team announced on Tuesday that Garoppolo will be the 49ers starting quarterback against the Chicago Bears in Week 13.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan met with Garoppolo and C.J. Beathard on Tuesday to inform them of his decision.

Garoppolo made his on-field debut for San Francisco late in Sunday's loss to the Seahawks.

"I think we brought him here because we want him to being the quarterback of the future", Shanahan said when Garoppolo was introduced. The four-year veteran is slated for free agency after the season, but Shanahan said the 49ers are willing to give him the franchise tag to ensure he stays in 2018. He was a 2014 draft pick by the Patriots and backed up Tom Brady for 3 1/2 seasons, other than his two starts to open the 2016 season while Brady served a suspension.

Garoppolo threw a touchdown on the final play against the Seahawks after Beathard was sidelined with 1:07 left. His 110.1 career passer rating would rank second in the National Football League in 2017, only behind Brady (111.7).

Several chains tightened store inventories as well, to ward off any post-holiday liquidation that would weigh on profits. The National Retail Federation (NRF) said fair weather across much of the nation had helped draw shoppers into stores.

The Jimmy Garoppolo era has finally dawned in San Francisco. He finished with four touchdowns, six interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 69.2.

Beathard suffered a bruised knee and strained hip Sunday, but neither was deemed serious.

Shanahan said previously that whoever starts must get all of the practice repetitions beginning with Wednesday's session.

"When you're making a long-term decision on someone for your organization, for you to pay him the amount of money that you do for quarterbacks, that's a big deal", Shanahan said. Beathard went down with an injury.
