Footballer Robinho sentenced to nine years for rape

A statement posted on his official Instagram account also says: "'We would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the accusations, affirming that he did not participate in the episode", said a statement posted on Robinho's Instagram feed.

Robinho, who now plays for Atletico Mineiro in his homeland, played for AC Milan from 2010 to 2015.

A Milan court on Thursday sentenced former AC Milan and Brazil forward Robinho aka Robson de Souza Santos to nine years in jail for gang raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan disco on January 22 2013.

Robinho was playing for the Rossoneri at the time.

"All legal steps are already being taken regarding this decision in the first instance".

The complex nature of the Italian judicial system means that there are various appeal processes available to Robinho and his legal team so it may take a while before any sentence is carried through.
