To drive her point home, Perry also waved a Taiwanese flag during the concert in show of support for the country, which has been butting heads with China for years over its independence.

Perry's rep did not comment when reached by Page Six.

Gigi Hadid was scheduled to walk in the fashion show for the third year in a row, but announced on Thursday via Twitter that she was no longer attending.

While she was initially informed that she'd be able to gain access, the decision was apparently reversed after the government caught wind of a controversial incident from 2015, in which Perry donned a bright, glittery dress with sunflowers on it during a performance in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

During the gig she also donned a sunflower gown - supposedly symbolic of the Sunflower Student Movement, which protested a Chinese trade agreement in 2014.

"I'm so bummed I won't be able to make it to China this year". Model Gigi Hadid confirmed her absence on Twitter.

Reports claimed Gigi was banned because of a "racist" video she posted back in February of her pulling a face in a lighthearted imitation of a Buddha cookie. Hadid apologized for the video, which was posted on her sister Bella Hadid's Snapchat account.

But Hadid isn't the only model facing setbacks.

While Perry will be replaced in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show by former One Direction band member Harry Styles, other models besides Hadid have been unable to secure visas to China, including Kate Grigorieva, Irina Sharipova and Julia Belyakova. According to Page Six, Adriana Lima might miss her second Victoria's Secret show since 1999 because her visa is being reportedly delayed over an "ongoing diplomatic problem".

Victoria's Secret has a dark history of being accused of cultural appropriation in its annual fashion show. It seems very tough to get a visa to China, indeed.
