David Goffin shocks Roger Federer, Grigor Dimitrov beats Jack Sock

Though Goffin showed some resilience by staying in the set with a tough hold having saved a set point, he crumbled on the return as Federer quickly closed out the first set 6-2 after 34 minutes.

A lengthy physio break for the beleaguered Spaniard was the only thing that stretched the match beyond an hour, but the treatment had little impact on the outcome of the match as Dimitrov ran away with the second set by the same scoreline.

The second game of the second set was to prove a turning point as Goffin, beaten 6-2 6-1 by Federer in Basel last month, broke the Swiss's serve with a forehand victor and then consolidated his lead to take the match into a decider.

If Dimitrov continues in this form it will be hard for Sock to challenge him, despite the American winning three of their four previous encounters.

David Goffin had pledged to find a way against the mighty Roger Federer in the Nitto ATP Finals.

Dimitrov defeated Pablo Carreno Busta, 6-1, 6-1, in the late match to become the first player to win all three round-robin matches on debut since Andy Murray in 2008. "But in the end, I was really happy about the way I played the match, I was really nervous towards the end of the match", Goffin said in his on court interview after the match. Federer then went wide with a forehand to give Goffin two match points and a first serve proved too good. "I'm just so humbled to be able to play the final tomorrow".

"It's another match - I just need to keep on playing".

The Swiss broke again in the fifth game before serving out the set in the eighth after 33-minutes of action.

A double fault from Goffin at game point at 2-1 looked to have cost Goffin, but he turned it back around to lead 3-1. What at first appeared to be an exercise in damage limitation grew into an increasingly potent threat as Goffin's serve subdued Federer, who fired a forehand long on his only break point in the set. Sock came to the net and threw in some sliced drop shots during a rushed final service game in the second set, but then netted successive rally balls to gift Dimitrov an unexpected bagel.

"She's somewhere hiding", said Dimitrov. It was a very close match, which was predictable as Sock saved one match point to beat Dimitrov in 2015 Montreal, and four match points earlier this year in Indian Wells.

"Just was great match, great atmosphere". I'm sure neither one of us is going to think about that.
