New US standard redefines high blood pressure

That's according to new guidelines issued by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, which state that 130/80 mm Hg or higher now constitutes high blood pressure, or hypertension.

Under new health guidelines for hypertension, almost half of all adults in the United States suffer from high blood pressure and are at risk of major health problems.

Millions more Americans will be classified as having high blood pressure, but this doesn't necessarily mean more people will be put on medication.

Tighter blood pressure guidelines from USA heart organizations mean millions more people need to make lifestyle changes, or start taking medication, in order to avoid cardiovascular problems.

Instead of just one reading in the doctor's office, the new guidelines emphasize an average of readings over several visits, plus home blood pressure readings. Normal blood pressure is still considered under 120 mmHG for the systolic (top) number and 90 mmHG for the diastolic (bottom) number.

"We want to be straight with people - if you already have a doubling of risk, you need to know about it". "And yet it carries with it a really high risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney damage, so one of the most important things that I can do as the doctor is to treat high blood pressure and to prevent those things in my patients".

High blood pressure is caused when the force of blood pushing against vessel walls is too high.

Concerns about those side effects, as well as the fact that the close monitoring seen in a clinical trial is hard to replicate, led the AHA, ACC and other groups to select the 130 systolic blood pressure target.

FOX Business reached out to some of the top pharma companies named above but did not immediately receive a comment on how the new guidelines could potentially impact sales going forward.

A spokesperson from AHA told FOX Business that they do not have any projections regarding the "cost" to Americans for this change but did add that the "vast majority of those who are now considered to have elevated pressure will be prescribed lifestyle changes", like improved diet with less sodium and more exercise.

Experts said the majority of Americans affected won't need medication but will need to make lifestyle changes.
