California shootings at multiple sites kill 5, injure kids at school

One student at the school was shot and wounded, police said.

At least three children and one adult were brought to the Enloe Medical Centre, in Chico, California, the hospital confirmed to KHSL.

The six-year-old child reportedly had two gunshot wounds and another child was reportedly shot in the leg.

The Tehama County Sheriff's Department told the Los Angeles Times there were at least five separate crime scenes and the department was now trying to assess the number of casualties.

"We are aware that there was a domestic violence incident, as reported by neighbors, involving the suspected shooter", said Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston.

"I don't know how many victims; I know of at least three deaths", Johnston said. The shooter appeared to be randomly picking targets, authorities said.

At least six people had injuries, Denton police said, and no one had to be transported by ambulance. The fire department says it will be up to the city to determine if there were any code violations.

Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District, says no one was killed at the school but a "number" of students were shot and wounded.

In addition to the four people killed in the shooting, several people were injured, including children.

The school was cleared and the students inside were taken to a safe location.

A semi-automatic rifle and two handguns believed to be used by the gunman, who engaged police in a shootout, have been recovered, according to Johnston.

A reporter at Action News Now described anxious parents trying to get to their children at Rancho Tehama Elementary.

The owner of Coffee Addition, a cafe near the shooting, said she heard about 100 rounds fired and multiple guns. Brian Flint tells the Record Searchlight newspaper in the city of Redding on Tuesday that his neighbor, whom he knows only as Kevin, also stole his truck.
