Patriots claim tight end Martellus Bennett off waivers

Bennett signed a three-year, $21 million contract that included a $6.3 million signing bonus in free agency. Prior to his release, Bennett also tweeted that this season might be his final in the NFL.

Questions persisted all week in the Packers locker room about whether Bennett quit on the team after quarterback Aaron Rodgers went down with a shoulder injury. While the 30-year-old could try to play through the injury, the Patriots may decide to place him on injured reserve.

On Friday, Bennett was practicing with the Patriots.

Former Green Bay Packer TE Martellus Bennett has some choice words for his former team and their medical staff.

The veteran tight end, who was cut on Wednesday and claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots on Thursday.

Bennett played with New England last season, winning the Super Bowl over the Atlanta Falcons in a historic comeback.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged he advised Bennett seek additional opinions about his shoulder injury. "You adjust the way you do things, the way you game plan and the way you move forward".

"After conversations with my family I'm pretty sure these next eight games will be the conclusion of my National Football League career", Bennett posted.

Asked if he didn't believe Bennett was "on the boat", Richard Rodgers said, "I really can't answer that".

Gronkowski has been healthy and more productive this season, catching 34 passes for 509 yards with five touchdowns.

Last season, Bennett hauled in 55 catches for 701 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns.
