At least eight people were killed and nine more injured after a rental truck tore through a bike path in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday.

As detailed by police shortly after the incident, a vehicle entered the bicycle lane on West Street, a few blocks north of Chambers Street, a busy area due to pedestrian crossings, parks and bicycle lanes.

It was here he would commit what New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called a "particularly cowardly act of terror".

Law enforcement officials, who were not authorised to speak to the media, named the man in custody as Sayfullo Saipov. He was arrested in Missouri on a traffic violation past year.

The driver in yesterday's attack barreled along the bike path in a rented Home Depot truck for the equivalent of about 14 blocks, or around eight-tenths of a mile, before slamming into a small yellow school bus.

President Donald Trump railed against the Islamic State on Twitter and declared "Enough!" and "NOT IN THE U.S.A.!" There are no indications yet if this incident is terror related.

As its caliphate crumbles in the Middle East, ISIS has been encouraging its sympathizers in the West to stay in their home countries, directing them to carrying out low-tech terror attacks using vehicles.

The White House said that Mr Trump had been briefed on the attack. His efforts have been repeatedly struck down in the courts, and Ubzekistan was in any case not among the affected countries.
