The Sasebo-based amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48) rendered assistance to two distressed mariners, October 25, whose sailboat had strayed well off its original course. Both women, and their dogs, Valentine and Zeus, looked fit and vigorous.

Appel told the "Today" show that she once took the dogs downstairs and "we basically laid huddled on the floor and I told them not to bark because the sharks could hear us breathing".

Two American sailors and their dogs have been rescued after drifting off course and spending months sending out distress calls in the Pacific Ocean, the US Navy said Thursday. They saved our lives. "And she said 'yes mom, ' and that was really exciting".

She feverishly blows kisses toward the rescue boat.

The Guardian says that during that time Joyce Appel moved house and had a new phone number and anxious her daughter may not be able to reach her.

Joyce alerted the authorities 10 days after her daughter left for Tahiti. "The Coast Guard, in Hawaii, did a search and rescue effort", she said. In that time, the elder Appel moved and got a new phone number and was anxious her daughter wouldn't know where to call. "I knew she didn't even know the phone number here", she said.

"I had hope all along, she is very resourceful and she's curious and as things break she tries to fix them, she doesn't sit and wait for the repairman to get there, so I knew the same thing would be true of the boat".

The combine survived so long adrift by bringing water purifiers and over a year of sustenance on board, fundamentally as dry merchandise, for example, oats, pasta and rice, as indicated by Appel. USS Ashland were on the scene the next day.

The pair, along with their dogs - or the "boys", as they call them - survived two separate shark attacks, they said.

The US Navy said the two women continued with the calls daily, but that their signals were not picked up because they "were not close enough to other vessels or shore stations". Steven Wasson, as saying in a press release accompanying the video.
