After the election Caruana Galizia turned her sights on Nationalist Party leadership candidate Adrian Delia.

It was through her blog, a year ago that she unveiled the existence of two Panama companies that belonged to minister Konrad Mizzi and Prime Minister chief of staff Keith Schembri.

No one has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack.

Speaking at a press conference, Muscat condemned the killing as a "barbaric" act and ordered security services to devote maximum resources to bringing those responsible to justice.

Mr Muscat sued Caruana Galizia over blogs she wrote earlier this year.

She had also exposed Malta's links with the so-called Panama Papers document leak, which revealed the identities of the rich and powerful around the world with offshore holdings in the Central American country.

"Everyone knows Ms Caruana Galizia was a harsh critic of mine, both politically and personally", he said.

He said: "I will not rest until I see justice done in this case".

On Monday, she had written: "There are crooks everywhere you look now".

According to TVM, she had reported having received death threats to the police.

We will remind, on 3 April 2016, the global consortium of investigative journalism (ICIJ) in the framework of the project "archive of Panama" (Panama Papers) published a major investigation of the offshore world of hundreds of politicians, businessmen, sporstmenov and cultural figures.

Galizia's son, Matthew Caruana Galizia, is a journalist and programmer who works for the ICIJ.

Muscat, who has been premier since 2013, went to the polls a year early after his wife was implicated in the scandal.

The bomb was detonated near the village of Bidnija in northern Malta after 3pm. While the perpetrators have not been identified, the violence is thought to have been linked to disputes between criminal gangs.

On Twitter, Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, said Caruana Galizia was a "tragic example" of a journalist who had "sacrificed her life to seek out the truth".
