The wave of protest has been condemned by the USA right wing and President Trump, who last month urged fans to boycott National Football League games until "players stop disrespecting our flag & country". Colt's players stood, linked arm-in-arm.

Pence, the former IN governor, had attended the game to watch a ceremony honouring former Colts great Peyton Manning scheduled for half-time, but chose to leave after the anthems.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick stirred controversy when he knelt for the anthem in protest against police brutality previous year.

Pence used to taxpayer money to fly to Indianapolis just so that he could leave in a fake protest over players protesting during the national anthem. "I asked the vice-president Pence to leave the stage if players put a knee on the ground [during the national anthem], a lack of respect for our country", he wrote on his Twitter account.

"I left today's Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our flag, or our national anthem".

But after the story began making headlines, La Canfora backtracked tweeting, "Standing for Anthem wasn't something that I spoke to Colin about". "While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I don't think it's too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem. He has never discussed this with anyone". He said during a political rally in Huntsville, Ala., on September 22 that National Football League owners should fire the players who knelt during the anthem.

However soon after he took the action on Sunday (8 October), CNN White House reporter Kevin Liptak pointed out that Pence had been in Las Vegas earlier in the day and had flown in a C32 (AF2) to Indianapolis, a plane which costs $42,936 (£32,000) an hour.

Pence, who has gone out of his way to demonstrate loyalty to Trump, said in his statement it was important to rally around the flag and things that unite the country.

United States vice president Mike Spence walked out of an NFL game as players kneeled during the national anthem. That's not an low-cost thing to do.
