NASA officials say seeing a harvest moon is October is rare, since it usually comes a month earlier. The moon will continue to rise shortly after sunset the few days after the event and will provide extra light, but not as much as when its a full moon, reports The Old Farmer's Almanac.

A harvest moon in the Northern Hemisphere is the full moon that appears closest to the autumn equinox, which usually falls around Sept 22.

This time of year, the moon stays out all night long.

The name Harvest Moon dates from when farmers needed bright light to extend the working day.
