In Puerto Rico, 'the Hospitals Are Still in Crisis'

The island nation is in dire need of assistance after Hurricane Maria flooded the region, leaving a destructive passage through the Caribbean last month.

The White House budget office director said on Wednesday that the President "meant" that the island will have to "figure out a way to solve its debt problem".

The President has promised to build a wall along the US' southern border to keep out illegal immigrants and drugs, and repeatedly claimed Mexico will pay for it.

Later in the evening, the governor revised the death toll to 34.

"I wouldn't take it word for word", Mulvaney said, when asked by CNN's Chris Cuomo whether Trump meant to "wipe out" Puerto Rico's debt.

In addition to the briefing with local officials, the president and first lady Melania Trump also will "visit with individuals impacted" by the deadly storm, according to the White House schedule.

And San Juan's hospitals are faring far better than those in less populated areas, Santiago said: "What you are seeing around here, it's heaven compared to some people in the inland, in the mountains".

Caught off guard by the severity of Hurricane Maria's damage to Puerto Rico, Mr Trump did not focus on the storm for days.

"Every death is a horror", he said, "but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina and you look at the tremendous, hundreds of and hundreds and hundreds of people that died, and you look at what happened here. nobody's ever seen anything like this".

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said more than 12,000 federal officials are now on the ground on the island, and 45 percent of customers now have access to drinking water.

As of Tuesday, almost two weeks after Hurricane Maria walloped Puerto Rico, knocking out its electric grid - nearly 90 percent of cell phone sites on the island remained out of service.

The natural disaster destroyed homes, cut off most of the island from electricity and littered roads with fallen trees and debris.
