Donald Trump tweeted that "big decisions" were pending on how to rebuild hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico as the mayor of the island's biggest city, San Juan, said the response to the disaster was "not a good news story". Many people believed that he was quicker to extend help to the individuals impacted by this summer's hurricanes that occurred in Florida and Texas than he has been for those living in Puerto Rico.

Speaking at a hotel a few blocks from the White House, Trump mentioned that Puerto Rico's electrical grid and infrastructure had been in poor shape beforehand, saying, "we're literally starting from scratch".

While this series of tweets were reportedly sent from Trump's golf club over the weekend, reports say that more than 10,000 federal officials are working to clean up and restore Puerto Rico.

Mr Trump has pledged to spare no effort to help the USA territory recover in the aftermath of the hurricane, and also tweeted that military personnel and first responders had done "an wonderful job" despite having "no electric, roads, phones etc". Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert said 44 of Puerto Rico's 69 hospitals have been restored to operation.

"You're a congenital liar", he wrote in response to a third tweet from Trump, adding with a link to a donation site for a Latino nonprofit.
